Planning Permission

  • In the majority of cases to install solar panels on your roof you will not need to apply for planning permission, but it is advised you check with your local planning officer first.
  • If your property is a listed building or is situated in a conservation area or World Heritage Site, you should seek listed building/planning consent.

Conditions which apply to all solar panel installations

  • Panels should be sited with care to minimise the effect on the appearance of a building and the amenity of the surrounding area.
  • Panels no longer needed should be removed as soon as possible.

Conditions for roof and wall mounted solar panels

  • So far as is practical, panels should be positioned away from a roof’s ridge.
  • Panels should protrude no more than 200mm from a roof or wall surface.
  • Although planning permission may not be needed, if you are planning a listed building installation you are likely to require listed building consent.
  • Wall mounted only - If your property is in a conservation area or World Heritage Site planning consent is required when panels are to be fitted on the principal or side elevation and they are visible from the highway.
  • Wall mounted only - Where panels are to be fixed to a building in your garden or grounds they should not be visible from the highway.

Conditions for Standalone Solar Panels

  • An installation should not be taller than 4m.
  • It should be sited at least 5m from boundaries.
  • Size of array is restricted to 9 sq m or 3m x 3m.
  • Should not be placed within boundary of a listed building.
  • If installed in a conservation area or in a World Heritage Site it should not be visible from the motorway.
  • Only one stand alone solar installation is permitted.
